Ivy Removal and Wall Restoration Case Study in Sheffield

At Trusted Cleanerz, we recently completed an ivy removal and exterior painting project in Sheffield for the owner of a newly purchased house. The main issue was heavy English ivy growth across the front wall, with vines reaching up onto the roof and beginning to spread towards the neighbouring property.

The customer wanted the ivy removed mainly for aesthetic reasons, as it was making the house look untidy and had already started flaking paint from the rendered wall. They wanted to improve the overall appearance of the property, stop the ivy from spreading further, and avoid any future issues with the neighbour’s side.

Why the Customer Wanted the Ivy Removed

When we first inspected the property, the ivy had taken over a large section of the front elevation. It had climbed up the rendered and painted wall, reached the roofline, and was beginning to creep towards the neighbouring property.

There was also another area of ivy originating from the side of the house, which we removed as part of the same job.

The biggest concern for the customer was the appearance of the house. As the ivy had matured, it had started lifting and flaking the paint from the wall, making the property look neglected. Because this was a newly purchased home, improving the external appearance was a priority.

There was also the risk that if the ivy continued spreading onto the neighbouring side, it could create future complaints or disputes. We cover that wider issue in our blog about what to do if your neighbour’s ivy is growing on your house.

Careful Ivy Removal From a Painted Rendered Wall

The first stage of the job was to remove the ivy carefully from the front wall and from the side of the property.

Because this was a rendered and painted surface, the removal had to be carried out in a controlled way. Pulling ivy away too aggressively can cause further damage to paint and weak areas of render, especially where the plant has been attached for a long time. Your service page also explains that ivy is best removed in controlled sections to reduce the risk of pulling away pointing, paint, or render.

We removed the growth section by section until the affected areas had been cleared.

Once the ivy was off, the usual aerial root marks were still visible on the wall. This is normal after removing mature ivy that has been attached to a surface for a long period of time.

Why We Did Not Pressure Wash the Surface

One thing many homeowners do not realise is that removing ivy does not automatically leave a clean wall behind.

Ivy leaves behind root marks and staining, and on many surfaces these remain visible even after the plant has been removed. In our experience, even on brick walls those ivy marks often do not come off properly, even with pressure washing.

On this property, pressure washing was not the right option anyway because the wall was rendered and already painted. Using high pressure on that type of surface could have damaged the finish further, so we avoided that approach.

Instead, we followed the safer and more professional method for this type of wall.

Biocide Treatment to Kill Algae, Mould and Organic Growth

After the ivy was removed, we applied a biocide treatment to the wall.

This was done to kill off any remaining organic growth on the surface, including algae, mould, and other biological contamination that had developed behind the ivy. Dense ivy traps moisture and shades the wall, which creates the ideal conditions for this kind of growth to develop. Your main ivy service page also notes that heavy ivy can hold moisture against exterior surfaces and contribute to damp-related problems.

Applying biocide helped prepare the wall properly for the next stage of the restoration.

Why We Waited Four Weeks Before Painting

After treatment, the wall was left for around four weeks before painting.

This gave the surface time to dry out properly and allowed the treated area to stabilise before any coating was applied. That gap was important for achieving the best possible finish and making sure the new paint would adhere well.

The root marks were still visible before painting, but the customer understood that and was happy for the wall to be painted over as part of the overall restoration.

Painting the Wall and Soffits in Pure Brilliant White

Once the wall was ready, we returned to paint the property using Sandtex Ultra Smooth Masonry Paint in Pure Brilliant White.

We applied two full coats to achieve solid, even coverage and a bright, refreshed finish. We also painted the soffits as part of the job, which helped improve the overall look of the front elevation and made the final result feel complete.

This stage completely changed the appearance of the property. The front of the house went from looking tired and overgrown to looking fresh, clean, and well cared for.

The Finished Result

This project made a huge difference to the appearance of the house.

What had been a front wall covered in overgrown ivy with flaking paint became a clean and freshly restored exterior. The customer was very happy with the result, especially because improving the appearance of the property was one of their main goals after buying the house.

Removing the ivy also solved the issue of it reaching the roofline and spreading towards the neighbouring property, which reduced the risk of future damage or disagreements.

Need Help Removing Ivy From Your Walls?

This project is a good example of why ivy should be removed properly and at the right time. Once it starts affecting paintwork, render, rooflines, or neighbouring areas, it can quickly become more than just a cosmetic problem.
