After This House Sale Fell Through, the Homeowner Decided It Was Time to Remove the Ivy
We recently completed this ivy removal and exterior refresh project at a property in Greater Manchester after the homeowner decided the front of the house needed a fresh start before new viewings could take place.
The property had previously been on the market, but after the sale fell through, the homeowner became more aware of how the exterior appearance may have been affecting first impressions for potential buyers.

At the front of the house, mature ivy had spread across the exterior walls and around the bay window area over many years. Although the ivy had originally been kept for appearance, it had gradually started making the property look tired, heavily overgrown and more difficult to maintain.

The Homeowner Initially Tried Removing the Ivy Themselves
Before contacting us, the homeowner attempted to remove part of the ivy themselves and managed to clear some of the lower growth near the front entrance.

However, once they started pulling the mature ivy away from the wall, it quickly became clear how strongly the growth had attached itself over the years. Like many mature ivy removals, the stems had thickened significantly and bonded tightly to the render, brickwork and surrounding surfaces.
What initially looked like a straightforward job turned into something much more difficult once the thicker stems and upper growth became exposed.
The remaining ivy continued from ground floor level all the way up to the roofline and around the guttering areas.
Hidden Gutter Problems Behind the Ivy Growth
During the removal process, we discovered that part of the guttering had become dislodged behind the heavy ivy growth, likely caused by years of pressure and movement from the mature stems.
After fully removing the remaining ivy, we secured and refixed the affected guttering before clearing the walls and preparing the exterior surfaces for repainting.

Once the ivy had been removed, the property immediately looked more open and easier to maintain. However, visible staining, root marks and tired painted surfaces remained after years of mature growth covering the front elevation.
Refreshing the Exterior Before New Estate Agent Photos
At this stage, the homeowner explained that they wanted the property to feel cleaner, brighter and more presentable before the estate agent returned to take updated marketing photographs.
Rather than only removing the ivy and leaving the older stained surfaces behind, we suggested repainting the front elevation to completely refresh the appearance of the property.

The difference after painting was dramatic. The tired frontage was transformed into a much cleaner and brighter exterior, helping the property present far better for future viewings. Combined with the ivy removal, repaired guttering and tidied front garden, the house immediately looked more maintained and inviting from the street.
Importantly, the goal was not to completely renovate the property or hide defects. The aim was simply to improve first impressions and remove the neglected appearance that had gradually developed over many years.
Why Exterior Presentation Matters When Selling a Property
First impressions matter enormously when buyers scroll through property listings online. Overgrown ivy, damaged guttering and tired exterior walls can create the impression that there may be hidden maintenance issues before buyers even arrange a viewing.

In this case, the updated exterior photographs were taken by the estate agent almost immediately after the work was completed over the weekend. Within days, new viewings had already been arranged for the property.
Projects like this show how mature ivy can gradually change the appearance of a home over time, even when homeowners become used to seeing it every day themselves.
We recently completed another similar ivy removal and exterior painting case study in Sheffield, involving mature ivy growth, difficult removal conditions and repainting exterior walls after the ivy had been removed.
Final Result After Ivy Removal and Exterior Painting
The homeowner was extremely pleased with the final result and appreciated that the project went beyond simply removing the ivy itself.

By combining ivy removal, gutter repairs, exterior painting and general frontage improvements, the property was able to present much better for the next stage of marketing and viewings.
If mature ivy on your property has become difficult to manage, spread into guttering or started affecting the appearance of your home, professional removal and exterior improvements can make a significant difference to both presentation and long-term maintenance.
